Hi
Just joined and seen this thread.
My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Phimister, although both she and her father John, were born in Sunderland, Co Durham.
His father was Alexander Phimister, a mariner, born in Caithness, Wick.
However, can't find any mention of him in birth registers in Scotland's People.
Guess most of the Phimisters were probably related; not sure how common the name is.

Hi James

Thanks for your reply.

Alexander Phimister was born in 1825 and he was 28 when he married Elizabeth Burdis in Sunderland in 1853. On the marriage certificate his father is John, who is also a mariner.

Alexander and Elizabeth's first child, John, my great grandfather, was born in 1853.

Unfortunately I have no other information on Alexander.

Hi James
I've just looked at your post and I think that those names might be mine. Certainly the names Alexander and Elizabeth are mine and also the occupation ties in with what I know. I do know that the name Alexander was used in the family as my grandmother, Eleanor Phimister, had a brother whose name was Alexander.
Would you know where I could get information on Alexander senior's place of birth?

Hi Margaret, I'm new to Phimisters, even newer to Burdis.  Trekking through Rootsweb, found this and wondrered if you thought it worth checking:

I'm still blundering around in the dark for you meantime.

Hi James
Thanks for the reply. I'll be checking that one out.
Interestingly I have the name Burdis on both sides of the family, although the other one is through marriage and not a blood relative. As they both occur in the family tree at about the same time I am seeing if there is a link.
Funny how things turn out
I'm not giving up on the Phimisters - I've found that often things just slot into place when you least expect it.
