Cannell's of Ramsey
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 19:50 BST (UK) »
Hello ,
new to the site so hope this is where this request should be.

I've Cannell in the family and tracked back the Liverpool Cannell family
to a John Cannell DOB abt 1820 Ramsey IOM.
According to the 1851 Census he was married to Louisa ? born Liverpool abt 1821.
They had 3 children William 1846, Ellen, 1848, John 1850.

I'm unable to track John Cannell senior  in Ramsay IOM.

TIA zacc :)

TRY   familysearch  .org    for    baptisms    in   Ramsey    about   that    date   &   nearby   parishes   Michael  etc.

John    Cannel    is    a    common    Manx    name.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Yes I've worked out John Cannell being common to IOM ,in fact it was traditional on the island to name family that way .
I was hoping the Louisa might help differentiate him. ;)

zacc  :)

The     1820     IGI    Ramsey    record   is    interesting     as    at   that    date    you    would   expect    people   in   Ramsey  to    attend   nearest   CE    parish   church   by   their   home    either   Lezayre   or    Maughold.    Look   for
date   of    St    Mary's   of   Ballure   a   CE   chapel   of    ease   to    save   people   having   to   walk   so  far [ now   a
house]

look up Ramsey on www.manxnotebook.com
I know the burial reg for Ramsey has not been published by IoMFHS (I did my own transcription) I also suspect the bapt/marr needs careful looking at - borrow the mormon microfilm of the 1911 official transcript rather than rely on the IGI - I have described the Manx IGI as the only sow's ear constructed from a silk purse (the official copy is excellent - probably 99.9% correct, in a modern uniform hand throughout - it is amazing that the IGI can contain so much junk and invention)
any thing with a Manx Connection
