Estate records.
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 22:59 BST (UK) »
This is a long shot, I know. Does anyone know where I might found out if estate records survived. My family lived in Killeentierna. The estate was owned by Richard Meredith of Dicksgrove. I have hit the proverbial brick wall and thought I might find some details in his records.

Hello janglover,

It might be worthwhile attempting to trace more information about the Meredith family. Were they in Ireland at the time of the Civil War? Did they have other estates. If there are records for the estate and they're not held in archives somewhere in Ireland there may be a possibility that they are still in private hands.

Hi Christopher,
I hope to have some free time over the summer, so I might check with the National Archives and see how far I get. I never realised that they might still be in private hands. I know that in Kenmare some of the estate records are open to the public. Would definitely be worth doing some research on the Merediths.
Thanks for your help

Hi Jan,

Did you post on Yahoo Answers five months ago?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071202013845AAIMjm9

There's an entry for Richard dated 1825 on Nick Reddan's Newspaper Abstract site http://members.iinet.net.au/~nickred/newspaper/np_abst25.htm

There's a large amount of Meredith information on RootsWeb ... http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/MEREDITH-IRISH/2007-11/1194018059

Thanks a million for all your help, everyone. It wasn't me on Yahoo but I shall have a read of it anyway. My ancestors were all stonemasons and lived on Merediths estate. The parish records for Killeentierna only start in 1803 and I have taken everything relevant from them. The name is Glover and obviously not originally from Kerry. I have been told that they were brought to Kerry to build churches, but from where.... That's the big question. I was hoping that Merediths records might give me a clue.

Hello Jan,

Keep an eye on the thread about Irish stonemasons on the Occupation Interests board as I hope to add more to it ... http://tinyurl.com/6s5r86 Your Glover ancestors may have been in a different part of Ireland or even Scotland as the Irish and Scots were experts at dry masonry. It would depend what type of workmanship was in those buildings in Kerry.
