COMPLETED- '41, '61, 71 Dumfries - Penpont and Thornhill - Census
« on: Wednesday 04 July 07 10:05 BST (UK) »
Greetings,

Could someone look up the following for me, please?

James and Margaret McMillan - They were at Penpont on the '51 census. James was a blacksmith.

Marion Dawson - nee McMillan and daughter of the above. She was married to James Dawson and on the '51 census they were living in Drumlarig st, Thornhill. She remarried as a widow in 1872, so may be alone, or with daughter Agnes.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You're a star Joe.  ;)

Just have one question, is the first family Dawson?

The second is my Marion's McMillan family.

Thanks heaps,

Jamjar

That brilliant, Joe!  ;D

Once again many thanks.

We are off to the Dumfries library to seek and search more info. I have the McMillan's headstone photographed. Marion isn't on it and she isn't buried with her second hubby. Maybe she is with James.

Have found all the information required.

The library and burials department didn't have a burial site listed for James Dawson or Marion nee McMillan, Dawson, Jardine. So, we decided to go to Greenpark cemetery- Gatelawbridge via Thornhill, where James' family was buried. One step away from their headstone, was standing an equally impressive one for James and Marion! It was nearly 6ft tall, easy to read and enclosed in a wrought iron fence with James' family.

It makes one wonder how the recorders of these things miss them.

It turns out, Joe, that James' father was William. It is my James aged 12, on the census, but he and his siblings seem to have been raised by their uncle James. Thanks again for your help.

Also found the McMillan family and Penpont cemetery.
