Are Sark marriages on UKBMD??
« on: Wednesday 04 July 07 23:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find marriage of William Eaglen to Mary ??

William b. 1839 Saham Toney, Norfolk.

Mary b. 1848 Sark, Channel Islands.

Going off ages of children would have thought they married 1868.

First child William John b. 1869 Saham Toney Norfolk, but cannot trace parents marrying.

Do marriages in Channel Islands show up on UKBMD??

Joan

Re: Are Sark marriages on UKBMD and Family Bibles

HI

Thanks Pauline,

Never mind then.

This is my uncle's tree, he says a family member remembers an old family bible and says it was written in French.  They can remember it dated from early 1800s.

They assumed they were french, but if someone was writing on Sark in 1800s would they have written in English or French.

Any ideas anyone??

Hi Treelover

It might be an idea to get one of their children's birth certificates so you have Mary's maiden name. Searching with her surname (instead of Eaglen) might yield a result.

Birth registration:
William John Eaglen
Sept quarter 1868, Swaffam vol 4b page 379

Hi Dave,

Yes I'd thought of that too  :)  but I always check out other lines of enquiry before ordering certs, you never know.

Remember the saying "if I had a penny for every time ......................"
Well mine is "If I had £7 for every certificate ..................................."   ;D

Thanks
Joan

In the 1800s the residents of Sark certainly used a form of French as their main language.  My main experience is with Guernsey rather than Sark but even in the 1960s their were some elderly residents whose main language was Patois which was a local dialect of French.

It is intriguing that the place names in the Channel Islands have three pronunciations the local one, the English Visitors and the French visitors.
