 thats exactly the ones I am looking for thank you for that I am trying to find out about Mary Scott have nothing at all on her only that she was my g grandmother not sure if its her or not but there is a mary scott worked at the Kirkgate Talbot hotel

Hello again yazzie.

William Proudfoot seems to be identifiable on earlier censuses (if his parents were called Daniel and Margaret).

Mary, however, is posing a problem. There are several ladies with the name Mary Scott in Cumberland on earlier censuses but none of them give How Gill as their birth place. I am not familiar enough with the territory to be able to even guess if any of them might be the correct one.

Hopefully, someone else will read this and provide something more useful.

If nothing does come up in the next few days, you might have to consider getting the marriage certificate which should give some further clues from which to trace her. It would also confirm (or otherwise) if William’s father was indeed called Daniel.

You could try to find her yourself on the free 1881 census, if you wished. You can also find the William that I referred to with parents Daniel and Margaret on the 1881 census......
