1851 Census Lookup Please Ann Bassett
« on: Sunday 08 July 07 11:21 BST (UK) »
Could someone please look up for me an Ann Bassett born (Tottenham Crt Rd) approx 1830. Her father John (born 1783) may be there too. He may be down as a smith. They were in Cumberland Rd in1841. Would appreciate any help.
Thank you

Is it possible that Ann has married by 1851?

This might be John
District East London Union Workhouse, Aldersgate St, St Bartholomew The Great, Middlesex
John Bassett Inmate Married 64 Labourer British Subject
HO107; Piece: 1526; Folio: 104; Page: 6

Was he born out of the country?

There don't appear to be any other Bassetts listed as Inmates.

They were in Cumberland Rd in1841.
What were the references?

Dear MaryA
Thank you for such a quick response. I would need to check the 1841 Census to confirm where John was born. I  do have him down fron the IGI as 'St George Hanover Square, London. I don't know about Ann marrying for sure except there was a marriage for Ann Bassett to James Plummer in 1862. She gave her birth adddress in 1881 as Fitzroy Crt Tottenham Crt Rd( Same as her brother on his DC) Just crumbs and wonderings at this stage!
Thanks

Thanks Ricky, what a pity it wasn't more specific whether he was actually born in foreign parts which could have confirmed the 1851 entry.

I wonder if Harriet Williams, also born out of county, could have been a mother in law?

If the 1881 entry that Keera found for Ann Plummer is the correct Ann, then her birthdate would seem to be nearer 1827.

In 1861 there is a 34 year old Ann Bassett born London working as a kitchen maid at the Wesleyan College in Richmond Surrey.

Hi MaryA
I saw that one and I agree it could be a possible, there isn't many out there of the right age ???. Its a pity it don't say wether John is married or not as there is a John Bassett on the 1851 married to a Sophia living at St Pancras/ Marylebone aged 68 a house smith but says born Middlesex Westminster. Whats a house smith ???

Hi Ricky,

Now you got me, never heard of a House Smith before, nor is it listed under the old occupations

House Joiner      Made the wooden frames of houses
House Wright    House builder

I'd assume it has something to do with this but what specifically I don't know.  A search of Rootschat seems to link it with housesmith/stonesmith - could it be anything to do with a brickie?

My geographical knowledge of London isn't good but I'm guessing Westminster isn't the same area as Tottenham Court Road ??  I would have expected the 25 year old daughter to be with them in 1841 since she would have only been a teenager then.  Difficult to find them to discount them though.

Hi MaryA

On the 1841 they were living at  Cumberland Row St Pancras Marylebone,

Reg District St Pancras
Sub Reg Grays Inn Lane

The 1851 family were also living at St Pancras, St Marylebone
Ref District St Pancras
Sub Reg Grays Inn Lane, but no Ann Bassett living there ???

H0107/ 1495
folio 577
page 80

might just be a fluke with the 1851 family being there

It does seem very coincidental but I can't definitely connect one to the other - there's a possible marriage of a John Bassett to a Sophia Cons Bloomsbury Dec Q 1841 1/66 - it's very possible, as there is a 50 year old Laundress, Sophia Cons in Wood Cottages, Camden Town in 1841.  No death for that name.

The only Robert I find is in 17 Charles Street, Rectory, Marylebone, born Middlesex St Lukes, age 27 a cab driver married to Mary Ann 37 a Milliner, born Holborn.
