Bedminster: BIRD/ BURT Alonzo - FOUND!!
« on: Friday 10 December 04 23:54 GMT (UK) »
Researching my BIRD family in Monmouthshire, I have discovered an Alonzo BURT who married Elizabeth BIRD in Trevethin in 1873.

By this time Alonzo's father, William BURT was deceased, although Elizabeth's father John was alive.  I believe both the BIRDs and the BURTs moved from Wales to Bedminster.  Both fathers were miners.

Other than his marriage I can find no trace of Alonzo, although my mother remembers meeting him in the 1930s, when he was an old man (he was born approx 1853).

HELP!! Anything you may know...

Thanks, Arranroots    ;)

UPDATE
I have found Alonso aged 6 in Trevethin, Monmouthshire 1861.  RG9/4009/11/59

Would still like to know what happened to him, his mother Emma (a widow in 1861) and brother Henry.  His sister Elizabeth married a BIRD in Wales.

Further Updated:

Taking my courage in both hands, I have ordered and received a birth cert.

James BURT son of Emma (nee HURN) and James, a labourer.  Born 20th May 1852 in Abersychan.

My theory is that this is Alonzo...

BUT his marriage cert says father's name William (maybe he couldn't remember, since he died when the boy was quite young?)

There is a possible James in 1871, a farm servant  at Llantarnam      RG10/5351/99/36

Still no further sign of Alonzo/ James his wife Elizabeth or his mother & siblings.

HELP!!

Further Update[/size]

The brilliant Tanja has found - a birth for Alonzo!!

BIRT Alonzo Pontypool 11a 115 Sep 1854

Sending for the certificate seems wise.

I know there hasn't been a great rush to find Alonzo in later censuses but just to keep everyone informed, lol!

Hi CatOne

I have no idea!  And no, I hadn;t seen him - all leads appreciated though, especially if anyone can tell me more.  I wonder if he is on the 1910 census?

I do know that there is a fairly famous Alonzo BURT who invented some process for making billiard balls in the States but I can;t remember the details.  I sincerely doubt that the billiards man is mine though ...

It is lovely to be able to revive this search - if anyone can find him, RootsChatters can!!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Never, ever, ever give up!!

Despite beating my head against my laptop til it bled, I had been unable to find Alonzo.

I tried rallying the RootsChat troops again - and that did it!  :o 8) 8)

Thanks to Sue Teakle, who suggested a chap called Lonzo BROWNE in 1901 we have been able to trace this man back through the censuses to 1881 and his children include one who also features with the surname BURT, lodger with my grandfather's family - it is definitely them!!

Sue - your name should be up in lights - that was an inspired bit of research!!  :D 8)

Quite why the family suddenly started calling themselves BROWN is not yet clear - working on the theory that his mother remarried but why use BURT for some events (marriage and witnessing a marriage, son's birth) and BROWN for others (censuses)??

There is more to discover but I shall enjoy it the more knowing that at last we have run him to ground.

Many thanks to Sue Teakle and the tireless Tati  :-*

XOX
