forgot to say nephew and niece weren't always used in the same way as we do now. They could mean a male or female relative of a younger generation. I've got an instance of this in my own family where there's a young girl living the family who is grand daughter in one census and niece in the next and frankly I've no idea where she came from, she's certainly not a blood relation.
