Where is Ystravdla ?
« on: Monday 09 July 07 18:08 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Howell Harris is recorded in the 1851 Census as born in Brecon, Ystravdla.
I'm assuming its been transcribed incorrectly, but I can't fault it from looking at the original census image.
Can anyone suggest the likely real place?

Hi,

The best I can suggest is Ystradfellte.

Fisherman
Sockett in Shropshire, Montgomeryshire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Glamorgan and probably the rest of the UK
Corbet/t in Shropshire, Norfolk, Worcestershire
Gambold in South West Wales, USA, Australia
Baylis/s in Gloucestershire, South Wales
Richards in Breconshire
Manthorpe in Shropshire, Norfolk, Cheshire, Suffolk

that's just the piece number which covers a large area. Do you have the folio and page numbers as well? Or the rest of his details - age, where he lives, who he's with. The only Howell Harris that comes up with that ref is in Aberdare and he and all his family were born there.

Sorry,I did find him and I've had a look for them in 1841 as the youngest are dittoed as being born in Breconshire, but the family is in Resolven but not born in county HO107/1421/19 folio 5 pg 2.

Think Fisherman had the right idea and it is meant to be Ystradfellte.

Do any other of the family turn up on a later census with a legible place name?

Thanks for your help osprey & fisherman, I'll go with Ystradfellte.
I found what I think is wife Margaret in 1861 : - RG9 4067 Folio 56 page 17, but that just says Brecon.
Osprey, I wonder if you could hazard a guess as to the address for the 41 and 51 censuses whilst you're there?
Thanks again

1851, they're in Mill Street which was in Cwmdare according to the enumerator's description. I was rather hoping you wouldn't need to know about 1841. The village is Lower Llantwit

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/LlantwitJuxtaNeath/

The house name appears to be Blanyrany----, but the enumerator had the not so Welsh sounding name of Alexander Cuthbertson, so I don't know how much we can trust his spelling.
