clogdancer & osprey,

After seeing your postings I would say that it is has to be Ystradfellte.  In 51 the family is in Resolfen which is not far away.

To help with the house name in 51 I would think that it  should read Blaenyr__goed.
The enumerators interpretation has got me stumped as to the middle bit- unless and this is a total guess it should read Blaenyrhengoed which translated would mean Front of the old woods.

oh, that sounds a good possibility, Fisherman. I was completely foxed by the last few letters.I tried to find the same address in a later census, but the enumeration district had over doubled in size, not suprisingly in the Neath valley. And as you say, not too far from Ystradfellte and really not too far to their next move to Aberdare.

Clogdancer, I forgot to ask about the person sharing their house in 1841 - Rees Powell aged 75. As one of their sons is called Rees, I wondered if he was Margaret's father? But, I'm probably putting two and two together and making rather more than four.

Osprey, you could be right about Rees Powell being Margaret's father.
Seems quite likely. the name Reece has been passed down in every generation since.
The daughter Jennett Howell, born circa 1838 is my ancestor.
I could search for her birth to get the certificate and hence Margaret's maiden name, but I'm unsure what Registration district to look for.
The 41 census says born in county (Breconshire), 51 says Breconshire, Wales.
She married William Davies in 1854, and the 61 says Brecon, Breconshire.
Then they moved to Derbyshire and all the later ones say Aberdare.
Equally, she could have been born in Resolven or Ystra....
Any help with this one would be a bonus!
Thanks for your assistance so far (and to Fisherman too)

Ystradfellte was covered by Neath registration district at that time as was Resolven. It's pretty early on for civil registration, so no guarantees she was registered. However, there is this one that might be worth investigating
Jennet Harries dec qtr 1840 vol 26 pg 374
but she could be the one at HO107/1421/6 folio 9 pg 12 daughter of David & Lucy.

It might be worth checking the birth cert for the youngest child
Mary Harris march qtr 1846 vol 26 pg 450
Mary Harris june qtr 1846 vol 26 pg 502.

I've only checked FreeBmd, there might be more possibilities on the full GRO index or you could try the Neath office.

Thanks Osprey, I'll trawl thro' the full index. 1840 doesn't sit well with her age given in all the censuses as 38
