Marriage at Leicester St Martin
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 09:59 BST (UK) »
21st October 1773 Robert Thirlwall and Ann Stephens married at Leicester St Martin (family history online).

Are there any details as to where Robert came from ?

Are there any children of the marriage in the few years after.

Thankyou very much for any help.

Greeting’s Fizzy……..

I can confirm
from my early Leicester Marriage disk:~

Robert Thirlwall. ~ Ann Stephens.
St Martin’s Parish Church Leicester.
21st. October. 1773.
This Marriage was conducted by LICENCE

Therefore there will be extra information available via the Licence Bonds
Plus the Marriage registers.
Held at the Records Office Wigston here in Leicester.
If you wish I can but have a look on your behalf tomorrow
And report back on this thread. ?

In the meantime I'll have a whiz round the resources I have to hand
to see if I can spot any children of this Marriage.

MIKE.

That is so very very kind.

Thankyou so much.

What interests me is that the Thirlwalls dont seem to be in Leicestershire generally. I have a few of my South Yorkshire ones missing, one being a Robert and I am wondering if this is him.

Greeting’s Again Fizzy.

Sorry for my delay but I had to go out to a meeting…
I did have a GOOD look around
But the Only Reference  to your Robert was his Marriage.

No sign of either Baptisms / Burials within the five main Parishes at  the time.
Using other possible spellings of the surname.
So until I can see what details we can gain from
both the Marriage registers & Bonds
We only have one piece of the equation.

Hope for further information tomorrow
So you can decide if this Robert is one of your
Strayed flock. ?

Do you know Mike these Thirlwalls never cease to amaze me. One of them from Anston near Rotherham Yorkshire I found died in Drogheda. He had gone there as part of his job in the Inland Revenue !!!!!

Fingers crossed for what you might find tomorrow.

Not sure what Robert who married in Leicester did as a living.

The Inland Revenue guy was later than Robert and was called Thomas.

I hope that you can find something for me........

Thanks again

Greeting’s Again……. Fizzy.

Following my weekly visit to the Records Office
St. Martin’s Parish Church Leicester.
Fiche DE 1564. / 6. 1st Fiche of two.

Reads thus :~

ANNO DOMINI :~ 1773.
Entry No. 14.

Robert Thirlwall.of the Parish of COSBY
 in the County of Leicestershire.

Ann STEPENS  ( an alteration of a H  was added to read Stephens )
Of this Parish.
Married in this Church by Licence.
By Me :~ Tho’ Hains. Vicar.

Married this Twenty-first day of September.
In the year of our Lord.
One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Three.

Both signed by their own signature in clear copper plate script.

Robt. Thirlwall.
A. Stephens.

Wit’s :~

Tho’s Lockwood.

J. Throsby. ( Parish Clark and who was an accomplished Author )

EXTRA DETAILS FROM MARRIAGE BONDS :~

Micro film. No. 215.

Approved and Granted 20th September 1773.

Robert Thirlwall. Bachelor. aged 27. Yeoman of COSBY in the County of Leicestershire.

Ann Stephens, Spinster. aged 23. Of the Parish of St. Martin’s in the Borough of Leicester.

Permission that the  Marriage could take pace at either
St. Martin’s or St Michael and All Angels Cosby.

The securer of the Bond to the sum of £200 was :~
Tho’s Lockwood. a Draper of the Borough of Leicester.

Who made an  Oath that he know of no reason why the marriage could not take place.

So now we have several more pieces of the equation added.
Now the search will have to be switched to Cosby Area.
To see if we can find any children of this Marriage.

I hope this is of some help
and you can now uncross your fingers. ?  ;D

I am very excited by all this as this Robert has the same birth year as my Robert who has gone missing from Yorkshire altho I have no idea why he would be a yeoman in Cosby.

The signature in copper plate handwriting speaks of education methinks. My Roberts parents had died by the time he was 9 and I suspect that he was taken in and educated by the Tofields of Wilsic Hall, Tickhill. They were his mother's family. So, this could well be the same chap.

Are you able to do some lookups in Cosby for me Mike or would that be too difficult and time consuming. I was transcribing some records from the 1600s for Calstock Cornwall and the CMB were all written in the same book. So for example 1658 might be three marriages, followed by a christening, then a burial or two. What a mish mash - hahahaha.

Please let me know and MANY MANY thanks.

Fizzy :) :) :) :)

you should have a couple of PMs too.
