"Baptists Connexion" ?? Marriage query
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 20:52 BST (UK) »
My ancestor was married at Carmel Chapel, Pontypridd 1853: according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the "Baptists Connexion".

Have googled the church but denomination is unclear from the sparse info there.

Does anyone know the denomination and what is meant by "Baptists Connexion"?

The couple were both Irish and I had always believed that the family were Roman Catholics throughout.

Thanks,
Eagleye

Thanks Osprey,  looks like denomination was definately Baptist then.

The second link is a very interesting site but I still don't know what a Baptists "Connexion" means.

It seems they weren't married in the Roman Catholic faith then, though all their children were brought up as Catholics - strange.  I have also traced the bride's baptism and it was Roman Catholic, as expected.

A mystery.

think there's a reference to 'new connexion' in this article - they were more evangelical apparently.
http://www.shropshirebaptist.org.uk/history.htm

Just be thankful that they weren't baptists before civil registration like some of my lot - no infant baptisms and although I have seen a list of the members of the church, with a common surname, there's a lot of guesswork involved and tearing out of hair.
