Omdurman
« on: Thursday 12 July 07 02:52 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to find a soldier who's photo has this inscription on the back .........

'As I Appeared At Omdurman' - ( very famous battle! )

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,243915.new/boardseen.html#new

But we can't make out the name .... would it be possible to obtain a list of all officers present at Omdurman ??

Is there such a thing ?

I'd appreciate any help !

Hi Annie,
I can't help with the written name, but what about the photo? Does it show him in uniform?
Any clues there as to regiment/rank etc that would narrow the search down?

Not sure that there's a readily available listing of all officers at Omdurman (how do you know he was an officer by the way?). Might be a case of having to construct a list from the medal roll, casualty returns, Army Lists, official despatches etc etc

Hi Neil !

Do you think he could have been in 21st Lancers at Omdurman 2nd September 1898 ?

Try "Asplin Military History Resources"...page 2.....21st Lancers...1898.

Just type it into Google or Yahoo.

Hi Annie,
He could be 21st Lancers I guess, but I don't see anything definitive in the photo to be able to say one way or the other. There were plenty of other units at Omdurman as well.

Maybe someone else can see some clue in the photo.  ??? :-\
