"Archers Farm" - Aldenham - Help Please.
« on: Thursday 12 July 07 22:34 BST (UK) »
Hi can anybody help me please in finding out whether there was a farm called Archers in Aldenham.  I ordered my great grandfather's birth certificate and it says that he was born in 1859 at Archer's Farm, Aldenham.  I have tried looking on google, looking at old maps and even asking people who have lived in Aldenham all their lives if anybody has actually heard of the place but I cannot find it anywhere.  If anybody has any suggestions on where I could look next it would be gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Kayfr

I don't suppose the family still lived there 2 years later when the 1861 census was taken?

I've just looked at the description of each of the 4 enumeration districts in Aldenham in 1861 and did not come across Archers Farm  :(

I'll trawl through the censuses later to see if it comes to light then.

Carol

Hello Kayfr

What is the family's name? Do you have them in 1861?

Would you like one of us to look for them?

Hi Carol

The family name is Rumney.  I know that they were in Aldenham and surrounding areas in the 1840's onwards.  I am not sure about earlier because I need to go to where the parish registers are kept.

Many thanks

Hi Kay

These are the only RUMNEYS in Aldenham in 1861.  Addresses in country areas are a bit sparse and in this case, all that is given is "Round Bush" Aldenham.  There is a pub in the village called the Round Bush, but areas around a local landmark often took the landmark's name and this family is definitely not living at the pub.  (Not unless half the village lived there!)

I have checked the BVRI and have found the following.

Joseph RUMNEY to Hannah EDMUNDS
Married - 11 Oct 1840 - Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire
Husband's Father:   John RUMNEY
Wife's Father:   William EDMUNDS

Wheathampstead is very close to Sandridge where Anna/Hannah was born.  The marriage date would also fit with the birth of the eldest son William.  I couldn't find a baptism for Joseph Senior but I did find the following baptisms for the children of Joseph and Hannah.  All at Aldenham.

James - 3 Mar 1844
George - 3 May 1846
George Joseph - 1 Aug 1847
Ann Elizabeth - 7 Oct 1849
Arthur - 18 Jan 1852
Lavinia - 13 Aug 1854
Walter John - 21 Sep 1856
Charles Henry - 19 Jul 1859
Joseph Thomas - 27 Apr 1862

Hi Rick
Thank you very much for the information.  Round Bush is actually a hamlet just outside of Aldenham and the pub is still there!  They do very good food.  I think I need to go back a bit earlier.  I have got some of the information already but the extra comes in handy.  Wheathampstead is only about a twenty minute drive from Radlett where I live.
My father actually worked for a firm based in Round Bush until he died last December so it is a coincidence that his family used to live in that area.

Hi Kay

I was asking my husband this as he comes from Watford, and he mentioned that Round Bush is actually a hamlet.  I had never noticed, despite the fact that we have had a drink or three in the pub!

Would you like earlier census information?

Rick :)

Yes earlier census info would be greatly appreciated.  Where my father worked was opposite the pub.  He was a landscape gardenenr.  In fact he used to have half a bitter shandy on Friday lunchtimes!!  In fact I live in Radlett and it only takes me 15 minutes to walk from my house to Round Bush and when I was younger it was my local as it was walkable.
