Thomas and Elizabeth PRYN of Bodmin
« on: Friday 13 July 07 00:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

can anyone help me with anything on Thomas Pryn and Elizabeth Perry, married in Bodmin in 1849?

They soon after emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, where their son William is listed as being born 1852. Thomas, born circa 1827, died 1907 aged 80.

Thanks.

I saw that this morning, but can't seem to see any Parish records for Bodmin or anything on possible parents yet.

Appreciate your help.

Wonderful. Thanks.

The St Breock Thomas looks like the one to start with. The 1827 date matches his death certificate at least.

I see that both St Breock and St Wynn are similarly close to Bodmin, so there was probably a fair bit of movement between the three.

Appreciate your help greatly.

Hi Daisy May.

I also just realised that the name Francis is a recurring theme among the Pryns of Australia: One of Thomas' sons, born 1862, was Frank.

Two of his grandchildren, both sons of Frank, were George Francis and Francis Thomas. And a great-grandson was a Jonathon Francis.

So it looks like the Elizabeth you identified might very well be the right one. Or am I clutching at straws?

Again, really appreciate the time and effort you put in. Many Thanks.

Births Dec 1849
PRYN  John Perry     Bodmin  9 49

The marriage certificate for Thomas and Elizabeth would confirm their father's names and occupations and perhaps Thomas and Elizabeth's ages. Was Elizabeth the wife of Thomas really 13 years older than him? If so she would have been 48 when Frank was born in 1862 and 55 when Sarah was born in 1869.

A very good point Valda, and one I'd considered.

I'm very new at this. How do I go about getting a Cornish marriage certificate?

Also, it strikes me that if the folk on the Reliance are my Pryns, the age difference between either Thomas and Elizabeth do not match with the parish records from Daisy May. Thomas' death certificate indicates he was 21 when he got married, so he is likely the second Thomas listed.

The certificate also does not mention a son John (though I realise how misleading they can be) so perhaps John is the son of Thomas, 25, and Jennifer. It also appears that all my Pryn children were born in Australia.

it's intriguing.

Thanks for your help

You can order the marriage certificate directly from the General Registry Office online.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

There are no Thomas Pryn (ne) marriages to a Jennifer in the English civil registration not just Cornwall (1st July 1837-1850) and there is no evidence from the index that the other two Pryns onboard the Reliance were actually married and not two single people - who were not necessarily related to Thomas and Elizabeth or even to each other.
The actual registers themselves will give this further information.

'The registers contain the nominal and disposal lists of assisted immigrants arriving in Victoria from the UK. The nominal list usually gives details of each immigrant's name, age, occupation, religion, native place, and whether he or she could read or write. The disposal list details what happened to the assisted immigrant after arrival: for example, the name and address of the migrant's new employer, how long he or she had to work for them, the wages, whether this included rations, and the date the migrant left the depot.'

You need to contact Victoria Public Record Office to obtain further details.

John Perry Pryn may not have survived long and been forgotten by the time his father's death was registered (by whom)?

'It also appears that all my Pryn children were born in Australia.'

Assumptions are not proof. At this point you have evidence that this may be an incorrect statement. Either the Reliance passenger records and or John Perry Pryn's birth certificate may prove otherwise.
