Again, Thanks Valda.

The wedding certificate has been ordered.

I also take your point about assumptions, I only use them as a starting point for investigation, trying to work from what seem the most obvious clues, at first.

I also found a couple of more Pryns aboard the Reliance today, though with slightly different spelling:

PRYN   JANE   64   MAR   1850   RELIANCE   5   87
PRYN   WILLM   -   MAR   1850   RELIANCE   5   88

and, without assuming too much, Jane could be, perhaps, Thomas' mother.

best wishes
Gaz

Wow! That's very impressive, and that's an understatement.

If it's not rude (or dumb) to ask, how do you get your hands on that material so efficiently? Perhaps if I could do it, I wouldn't feel (or be) such a burden on folk like you.

Thomas' death certificate, signed by his son Frank, lists as parents: "unknown" and says he was married at 27, in England, to Elizabeth Perry.

At the VPRO there was also a note of a Jane Pryn, marrying a Richard Howarth in Blackwood, Victoria, in 1854. No mention of any children to them, nor mention of her parents.

Thomas and Elizabeth had  five children born in Blackwood between 1858 and 1869.

I hadn't been able to find a death certificate for Elizabeth Pryn(n), but I'd better look harder given the 1888 reference. I must have been doing something wrong - again.

Thanks so much for your hard work. I'm incredibly impressed.

This is a possibility for Jennifer Lightfoot's parents - I can't find her on the 1841 census, but St Breock registers in St Columb registration district.

HO107 149/5 folio 9
Burlorn St Breock Cornwall
John Lightfoot 50  born Cornwall Ag lab
Phillippa Lightfoot 45 Born Cornwall
John Lightfoot 15 born Cornwall
Jane Lightfoot 74  Born Cornwall

Two households away are the family of Richard and Maria Lightfoot. On the 1851 census they have a daughter called Jennifer (Jane on the 1841 census).

You can find St Breock and Bodmin on Google map facilities.

A possibility from the 1841 census - adult ages (those over the age of 15 are usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census only)

HO107 152/11 folio 21
Highway St Mabyn Cornwall
William Perry 55  born Cornwall Ag lab
Christopher Perry 15 born Cornwall
Elizabeth Perry 15 born Cornwall

As I can't find any of the Pryns on the 1841 census (and I've searched three different census indexes for 1841 so the name must be written really badly) and while I'm spending your money do you want to try for the death of John to see what parish he was born in, or search for William's death and see what he says his parents were called and whether they agree with John's death details? The Pryns of course may not in 1841 be in the parish of John or William's birth (if they were brothers and brothers to Thomas) but it might be worth a try.

Jane Pryn who married Richard Howarth had the maiden name of Arthur (as in John's wife's maiden name) and not Howlett as in John's mother as specified on his death. Might be worth searching the Reliance to see how many Arthurs were onboard.

The only male death in the September quarter (covering July) of 1842 in Cornwall and therefore the possible first husband of Jane who married Richard Howarth.

Deaths Sep 1842
Pryn  Thomas    St.Columb Major  9 41

Hi Valda,

I'll have another look at the Reliance to see who's on board. My experience seems to indicate that families travelled en masse during the goldrushes. I have another line where 11 family members, all women and children, came to Australia, 18 months after an advance party of menfolk. And that's without checking for in-laws.

It's hard to envisage the geography of Cornwall from this wide brown land, but would an address of 'Highway, St Mabyn' indicate a farmer, as shown on  Elizabeth's death certificate?

I'm embarrassed at the time and effort you've put in on my behalf, but who knows what's out there?

As for spending my money, don't worry too much about it. I don't have any.

Cheers

1841 census Ag lab = Agriculutral labourer and therefore farmed the land - but just for someone else.
Highway =  the main/public road

St. Mabyn

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/StMabyn/index.html

and

http://www.stmabyncornwall.co.uk/

which also has baptisms - but not for Elizabeth or Christopher Perry - drat!
Plus map of the village in 1839.

14 Arthurs on the Reliance including 3 Anns.
