Needing help with place name in Cork
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 00:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been trying to pin down my Irish ancestors to a place in Ireland and think I may finally have a clue.

Andrew O'LEARY, his wife Catherine (nee BURKE), 2 daughters and 2 sons arrived in South Australia in 1840 on board the 'Mary Dugdale' that had come from Bristol via Dublin.  I don't know the names of the sons but I'm hoping that one of them is my Gt Gt Grandfather James O'LEARY.   The names of the daughters are Honora and Agnes and I've just found an entry relating to Honora that reads as follows:.. "Honora O’Leary. Parents Andrew and Catherine. Born 7/12/1839 Bullivant, Cob, Ireland...."

I've googled Bullivant and nothing comes up apart from it's use as a surname.  Would I be right in presuming that 'Cob' is meant to be 'Cobh'?

I would appreciate any advice on where to go from here.  I may be barking up the completely wrong tree!

Cheers,
Alison

Buttevant is a place in Co Cork, perhaps that is the place you seek.

Thank you both for your suggestions.  It seems to fit doesn't it.  The information I was reading from was by another researcher and they possibly either mistranscribed it or had difficulty reading someone's handwriting.  Now to try and track down the rest of the family....

Thanks again.

Thank you for the link.  I'll have a good long look at it.

The onlyproblem here would be that Buttevant is in North Cork, and Cobh is in East Cork.  They are nowhere near each other- in fact they are over 40 miles apart.
