1881 census lookup please
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 09:55 BST (UK) »
hi ,
trying to find my greatgrandfather Owen Toner he married in Bathgate in 1885 to Catherine Bell but i cant find him before that.He was born in Ireland ?in 1860.
I have tried to find him in Ireland but i don't know where he was born his parents were Peter Toner and Catherine Mcgill.I have traced him after 1885 to his death in 1928.I would be really grateful for any help.On his marriage certificate his surname was spelled Tonner and the 1891 census also but it is spelled with only one n.
        thank you tinad

Interesting.

There is an Owen Tonner living in Kirkcowan in Wigtownshire in 1881.  He was born cir 1806 in Armagh in Ireland.  But there does not seem to be a younger one who might fit the bill.  An Owen Tonar, son of widowed Ellen Tonar, born 1867 in Rutherglen is listed in Rutherglen.  Lots of other Toners, most of them born in Ireland, but no Owen.  I don't see Peter or Catherine either.

What was his occupation (or his father's occupation)?  Perhaps we might be able to track him that way.

Nell

Hi Nell,
Thankyou for your reply.Owen in the 1891 census was an Oil refinery worker,in the 1901 census he was a Gasman?Peter was a General Labourer (deceased) on Owen's wedding certificate.I think Owen was born in Phillipstown County Louth because in the 1891 census for my grandfather's place of birth it said born Philipstown Linlithgow but there isn't a Philipstown Linlithgow. All i know is that he was born in 1860 Ireland.I only found his parents names off his burial records so i don't know their dates of birth.Sorry i know it's not much to go on,will Owen's place of birth be on my grandfather's birth certificate by any chance?
thankyou for your time it's all so confusing for me my English side wasn't half as difficult.

There was, and still is a place called Philipstoun Linlithgowshire, and there was an Oil Refinery there owned by James Ross & co, under licence from the worlds first Oil Man, James "parafin" Young.

I know this because my own family worked there, and I live just 5 miles from that place.

I have a photo of the works on one of my computers somewhere.  Look here :-

:-[ :-[thankyou for that but i will have to lay the blame with my mother she the Scottish one .I did a search and there was nothing in Scotland just Ireland but as i can see its not spelled the same,so that will teach me to take the census as gospel.thankyou anyway its back to the drawing board where Owen is concerned.

I can't find Sarah or Elizabeth either.  It doesn't look as if the family was in Scotland in 1881. :(
