Adoption in Chatham
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 12:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have recently discovered that a relative of mine adopted a baby girl in Chatham in 1918.

Can any one advise me if there would be any records & where they might be kept.

All concerned are now deceased.

Many thanks

Formal adoption only began in 1926.  Prior to this fostering arrangements were generally private but may have involved charitable organisations like Dr Barnado's.  Their records are confidential for 100 years except to the adult child, their next of kin or with their consent.  Other charities may also have similar confidentiality arrangements.

However, if the arrangement was private among family members (as was often the case) there may be no records to find.

Many thanks for your quick reply Nell.

I had a feeling that was the case & I have a sneaking suspicion that it could have been a family arrangement. At least you have confirmed that this could be a possibility.

Thanks again
