I dont know - I think it is, as they miss out on the fun of finding their ancestors! Not half as much fun if someone else did the research and hands you the answer on a plate, so to speak.

But you are right Tati - guess I am a bit addicted :)

Bless you both for all this new info.. sorry my thanks are tardy but I was at the hospital having a broken leg plastered.

Just a question-- you often say Ancestry is free at the moment but I do seem to have difficulty-- I guess it must be me --but if I click on the address you give & I'm not a subscriber I do not seen to get anywhere.
Thanks for the help

I cant remember exactly, but you probably have to register with them or something.

But I can guarantee I am not a subscriber and all the BMD look ups I do are totally free.

In the past I have bought pay-as-you-go credits from ancestry, when I have had several things to look up on censuses for my own tree, so I guess I am registered with them in some way.

Of course, if you live or work in or near London you can look these up in person, actually going through the index books (that are scanned on Ancestry) at the FRC Islington. Easier on the eyes than starring at a screen, but makes your arms ache pulling the books on and off the shelves!  Until the last few years this was the way to look up BM&D's - having it online is such a bonus. It does tend to spoil us, and make us want all the info as easily without having to actually go to any effort and SEARCH.

P.S hope leg is on the mend - I assume your broken leg? MAybe even if you do live near London you wont be up to humping index books anyway!

Thanks for all the info-- yes --it was my leg & I have 4 weeks in plaster.
It takes an hour for me to get to London & I have been a couple of times to the FRC centre-- I find the books easier than Ancestry which never tells me anything.  I do use FreeBMD. I have been dropping very big hints how Ancestry would make a nice birthday gift!?!?
Most of the info I found on the Lescher's I found with The Times on line.
Thanks again for your help
