WW1 Letters
« on: Monday 16 July 07 05:42 BST (UK) »
In 1978 I bought a bag of motorcycle magazines at a car boot sale somewhere around London.  Amongst the magazines was an old envelope containing two letters from a soldier awaiting action, to his Mum.  The soldiers name appears to be Private J or T Finch, although he signs his letters "Herbert".
The letters were sent from Harwich in 1914, to "Mrs J or T Finch, Newbrickfield Cottages, Coopersale Common, near Epping, Essex".
I would like to pass these letters on to a family member, given some proof of relationship.

Hi . I am researching Aberfeldy soldiers, and I would be very interested in any information regarding the Aberfeldy MacGregor man.
Is he mentioned in the letter?

Regards mik

Hi Mik.
No, I'm sorry.  The letters are completely unrelated to my family, and no mention is made of Aberfeldy or soldiers therefrom.
Cheers
Roger

Thanks for reply. Just curious as to what Aberfeldy refers to if not the letter?
The MacGregor am researching was killed in ww1 and his name is on the local memorial.
Cheers Mik

Sorry Mik, I missed the reason for your confusion.
The words "MacGregor" and "Aberfeldy" appear in my post only in my list of research families, which appends to all my posts on whatever subject.

Some of my wife's ancestors were MacGregors from Aberfeldy, but we have no information that they were soldiers. They came to NZ in the 1880's, and we don't know much about the family that stayed behind.  Some of them may well have been in WW1.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
Cheers, Roger

Sorry Roger. My fault. Am confusing your signature, with the letters you have.
Cheers Mik

You could try looking on the census lists for 1901 for that area on www.ancestry.com.  I dont think Finch is all that common a name and you can put in Epping to pin it down more.  Has the letter/envelopes got his service number on it because if so you can check on the Commonwealth War Graves site to see if he survived the war. Also on ancestry they have WW1 military records and his may have survived the ww2 bombing that destroyed quite a few!  Good luck with finding his family.
