1881 Census Lists:

Margaret Richards age 41, unmarried, boarder, born in Llangelier
Mary M. Richards, age 7, step-daughter, born in Pembrey

The use of the word "step-daughter" puzzles me! Status is usually
related to head of household, which is William Griffiths in this case.

Mary M. Richards cannot be Jane Griffiths daughter!

She is more likely to be the daughter of Margaret Richards.

Richards could be Jane's maiden name.

Your thoughts appreciated.

if you look at the message that osprey posted you will see that the marriage of william griffiths has jane richards on the same page.
if you send off for margarets birth cert. you should be able to find out who her mother is and possibly who her father is as well.

Why can't Mary M Richards be Jane's daughter? Jane's maiden was Richards She gave birth to a daughter, therefore the daughter's name is Richards. She married Wm Griffiths who was not the father of Mary, therefore her relationship to head of household is step-daughter.

Oops, sorry!

I made an arithmetical error!  When I was scanning the page,
comparing the 1881 and 1891 children born to Jane, I mistakenly
positioned Mary M. Richards as being born between Margaret J and
William John!   :-)

My plan is to order more certificates from Llanelly's registration office.
I was very pleased with how little time it took for me to receive William
sister's birth certificate from them.
