Devon Family History
« on: Sunday 12 December 04 03:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello All;
I am looking for my relatives in Holsworthy, Devon.  I'm new to England side of the fence.  Most of what I've been able to track down has been in Monmouth but now I've gone back to 1752 and have a letter from a gggrandfather that states his gggrandfather came from Holsworthy.  Since this is before the census, and BMD how would I go about finding any birth information?  Already checked Familysearch.org and Ancestry.
Thanks for any and all help you might offer.

Hi Louisa and welcome to Rootschat!  :D

Well you've come to the right place to start your Devon research as hopefully the Rootschat community can aid you loads.

Try posting a thread similar to this in the England -General, Devonshire and/or Devonshire Lookup Requests section, as it's obvious you aren't a real beginner, just new to this site.  ;)
If you give the details (name, DOB, death, marriage...) of the current person you are searching for and a brief intro to the family saga  ;)  then I wouldn't be surprised if someone were to find something useful.  ;D

Living here in Devon, I have a distinct advantage and can volunteer to perform some searches for you that otherwise would cost you loads.

Here are some of my favourite Devon links that may help:

Hello Geoff;
Thank you for your reply.  I'll check out the links you suggest.  As far as being new, you are right I'm not new to genealogy but new to looking for reli's in England proper.  I got a lot of help in finding the Welsh side of the family and most of it was on Familysearch.com.

In the letter I received from another relative, written in 1906, was from my gggrandfather who wrote about his gggrandfather.  As I had said in my previous post I had tied most of the LAKE's in Trelleck, Monmouth together but as far back as I could go was a Henry Lake born about 1752.  He married Sarah Lewis dau of Thomas Lewis in 1788.

I could never find Henry's birth information and felt that he had moved into the Trelleck area rather than being born there.  The letter confirmed what I had found and stated that Henry Lewis was born in Holsworthy, Devon.  It further states that Henry was one of 8 children and that Henry's parents were farmers and had died young.  The children were given to relatives to be raised.  The only other name of any children that was mentioned was a William that had fought in the war of 1812 when they burned the White House.  Wm. had fought in Battle of Blandensburg under General John Ross.

I would be most appreciative on any information you might be able to offer.
Thanks again.
