FREEMAN-HORNE AND STAPLEY
« on: Monday 16 July 07 22:57 BST (UK) »
Just started researching a family - FREEMAN-HORNE with zilch to go on other than it appears to be from Kent, England.  I have no dates as yet.
Only other info is from LDS:
Dorothy Stapley (Disc #6 Pin #290310) married a Mr Freeman-Horne - (Compact Disc #6 Pin #290311).

My query originates from a 90+ year old who is not in possession of a Family History.

Has anyone come across this connection?

Thanks,

James.

You MUST have more information or inkling than that.

Do you believe that this could be her Death index  record?

If I had, I'd have posted it, believe me. This is a matter of teasing snippets of info out of an elderly person who never kept records, and is therefore reliant on memory.

I cannot at this point confirm, but, certainly part of same family I'd surmise.

Thanks Pauline for your response.

Nevertheless, it would be reasonable to assume that you know the generational relationship between Stapeley,Freeman-Horne and this 90-y-old.

(ie. were they grandparents,parents,siblings/cousin,child,grandchild.)
That in itself gives an guide as to when to look for which records.

Pauline, thanks.

I don't even know for sure that Stapeley is 'part of her family', as I found that name on LDS with Freeman-Horne , not because I'd been told. The inference is that this hyphenated name has existed for 3 or more generations, in other words, probably from before hyphenated names  became 'fashionable'.
I'll be trying to dig further into her memory today.

The name Freeman-Horne is to me quite unusual, and narrowing it down to Kent would seem to make it unique. I'm wary of making too many assumptions in this activity, but, having on an impulse just looked up 192 for the nameFreeman-Horne , find 3 entries in Kent.  I believe therefore that they would be related.

As a general rule, with genealogy, it is always best to start with what you know, confirm it from as many angles as possible, ansd then work back to what you dont know, taking it just a step at a time and confirming everything before you move on.

A golden rule is 'Never assume anything'

Third hint is - family 'hearsay is notoriously innacurate! If the hyphenated name is said to be around for 3 generations - well take that as anything from 1 to 300 until proved!

So, I would hesitate to even think about this possible Stapley link at this stage. OK, with an unusual name you could well find it links in somewhere, so certainly keep a note of it, plus the info on any other Freeman-Hornes you find.

Googling FREEMAN-HORNE brings up a website with a  photograph of Dover Grammar School pupils 1946 which includes a P. R. FREEMAN-HORNE.

I can't see any entries for that surname on the census. ???

lizdb,  bearkat,

Thanks both.  Everything helps at this stage. Much obliged.
I did see one site which might have indicated where/when the two names were joined/hyphenated, but, as it was in U.S.A., I tread warily.

Thanks again,

James.

I must admit I am still not sure exactly where you are coming from or where you are going on this one!!!!!!

However, to start you off, a lot can be discovered and put together about this family simply from the Birth, marriage and death indexes.
They are free to search on
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx (you may need to register)

OK, to start with, on that link, all BM&D's from 1984-2005 are in a database, so very quick and easy.

Deaths of Freeman-Hornes are as follows:
Dorothy Ethel E born 27 Sep 1901, died Jul 1994 in Bexley Kent
Emliy bn 19 Mar 1908, died Nov 2000 at Hatfield Herts
Ethel Florence bn 29 Aug 1901 died Ug 1997 at Gravesend Kent
Neville William bn 19 Feb 1912 died Dec 1997 Greenwich
Peter Roger bn 1 May 1934 d Feb 2002 Ealimg
Roger Walter bn 31 Dec 1908 d May 1991 Hatfield

Marriages 1984-2005 reveals:

Information regarding possible living persons removed by moderator

births same years - NONE

So from this it looks like the name is dying out. Recent years have produced no birthd, and the only marriagers have been daughters, who thus changed their names.

but there is more....
