1841 Census Look Up - Gunter
« on: Sunday 12 December 04 13:44 GMT (UK) »
John Gunter (son) was born in Talgarth in 1825. On his marriage certificate he is noted as being a Smith and his father Henry Gunter is recorded as being a Shoemaker. I believe Henry was also born in Talgarth c 1800.

Have had no luck finding them on Talgarth area or Glamorgan 1841 census (John was married in Merthyr Tydfil and eventually settled in Cwmbach).

Is there any chance someone can check out the Monmouth census to see if they were living over the border in 1841 please?

Many thanks

[Edit] Apologies, I neglected to mention that the areas I suspect they may have moved to are Hay or Abergavenny - many thanks

Hi Nigel

No record of Henry and John Gunter in Abergavenny parish 1841.  My Monmouth 1841 CD's are not indexed so I have only searched the districts specifically under Abergavenny.  No luck sorry.

I think Hay would be found in the Brecon census.

Best wishes

Thanks for checking Rhys  :)

Have defintely established that Henry's wife's name was Elizabeth. John was definitely born in Talgarth 1825, also a brother William in 1823 and a sister Elizabeth 1827. I'll probaby give Herefordshire a go next!  ::)

Have found what looks like a Hy Gunter aged 70 or 76 on the 1871 Census - a widower lodging at 7 Geo(rge?) Street in Bedwellty, town of Tredegar - a shoemaker - born in Brecon, Talgarth. Suspect this may be my lost relative.

If possible - sorry I know it's not indexed - could someone check for any trace of a Henry Gunter age c45 - shoemaker in Bedwellty area on the 1841 Census please.

If 1851 & 61 is indexed - any info from those census would be appreciated if found.

Many thanks
