I could (just about) accept it if they had removed access to just the images.
I'm pretty sure that when the images first went on there it was a 'temporary measure'.

Removing the ability to see the district/page/"others on page" too though is making me spit feathers.

It would of been good if they said that it was being taken off. I read through the home page and what's new page and can't find anything that says they were stopping the free access.

I have a "free" account and a paid up account (please don't ask why!). using the Free account I can get virtually NOTHING - even the names come out as ****

Perhaps they are trying to make $$$ before the GRO brings out their new index - is that going to have an associated charge I wonder.

Hello To All RootsChat Members,

We have also been having problems with Ancestry.com this evening.

I think they are in complete 'LOCK-DOWN'.

Over the past few months the site has helped us greatly with the access to Births, Marriages & Deaths - in obtaining the Vol. & Page Numbers for relevant Certificates, which we sent away for.  Resulting in my husband tracking down his long lost cousins in England, and now enabling us to piece together the  mysteries of the past.

What we have found out this evening as to what is happening with 'Ancestry', is as follows:

First we Logged in.
(Clicked on) More Collections - then (Clicked on) 'Births, Marriages & Death Records'.
Then keyed in details for a Search.
Results:
There are NO Year Dates for a Birth (as previously did list).
Yet, still has Death Year Dates.
Also NO Township details (where as previously did list).

If you place the Cursor on the RECORD TYPE (Do not click), a Box will appear, saying:
"Subscribers Can Also See"
'A large scale Image of the original document'.

(If you Click On, the following)
'Details About The Following Information'.
Year Of Registration.
Quarter Of Registration.
District.
Volume.
(I think previously we were able to access these details, at least at one stage).

THEY WANT EVERYONE TO SUBSCRIBE.

Whether you place the Cursor or Click, you will end up at the page where they want you to 'Subscribe'.  If you Scroll-Down, it then explains what is 'Free' and 'What Is Not'.

All That Is Offered - 'Free' NOW is!
*  All the tools you need to build, grow and share your family tree online.

*  The ability to upload photos, documents and stories to your tree.

*  Shared access to your tree for family members.

We will also have to look for another site, to help with our research of Births, Marriages and Deaths.

They will be the losers!  However if we all stick together, things may do a turn-around.

Hope this explanation helps.

Thanx for that Jeanette. Not sure if I need to subscribe right now, so I will not be going back there. I will make do with Free BMD. I know it does not have the full listing as yet, but time and patience huh? Lynn

Thanks for all the information Jeanette. Earlier today when I tried Ancestry again 'FREE' was still next to a few databases but when I tried to access a few of them the Subscribe Now screen came up yet again and I was hoping it was (another) Ancestry glitch that would soon be fixed. Unfortunately, as my family are scattered all over the world I would need the complete subscription which I can't justify at the moment.
