scanlan ballylongford
« on: Friday 20 July 07 12:03 BST (UK) »
Hello again .I contacted RootsChat earlier this year about my ggrandmother Hanoria Scanlan from Ballylongford Kerry I have obtained a marriage certificate showing her marriage to Giles Cook (address Tarbert) a Royal Marine from Somerset Would it be likely he was stationed there in 1882/.The marriage took place at the Roman Catholic Chapel in Ballylongfofd in the Union of Listowel. Her father`s name is shown as Michael Scanlan (dec`d) Witnesses are Thomas Mulihill?and Daniel scanlan.I wrote to the parish priest and the reply only added her mother`s name as Mary ,no surname. The Catholic church at Ballylongford was dedicated in 1871 so does this mean that before that date another church would have been used for earlier marriages etc?Can anyone look up any likely earlier ancestors please I am planning to visit Ireland some time but would appreciate any help or advice Sorry its such a long story    Catherine

Hello Catherine,

Just wondering if Scanlan could also be Scanlon as I have in my family tree Leahy's, McElligott's and Scanlon's. Leahy's and McElligott are from ballylongford.

Thanks

Alain McElligott

Hello Alain I have seen your name come up several times and did wonder if there was a connection The marriage cert does show SCANLAN but the witness looks like SCANLON ?????? I recently visited Ballylongford and was confused even more with the spellings .Do you have a Hanoria in any of your info please ?  Thanks Catherine
