« on: Friday 20 July 07 21:24 BST (UK) »
Not sure where to post this, so I'll start here and if a mod. thinks it should go somewhere, no problem.........so.......

Are there any census or places to search for information from Yugoslavia?

The last name I am looking for is Cengija.

Thanks,
Karen

www.cyndislist.com has a section (Eastern Europe) which includes Yugoslavia. Bear in mind that boundaries and names of places might have changes, especially since World War I in that area.
Could also try putting surname in Google and see if anything comes up but variations in spelling might make your search harder.
Also see if you can find the meaning of the name in English (or wherever they might have gone) as spelling could have been Anglicised (perhaps by one branch of the family but not another).
(Checked Geneanet website and one 1 entry came up- 2 gravestones in Ontario).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for the info.

The two graves in Ontario are my friend's parents that I am trying to help.

Her father came to Canada c1950's

Will check out cyndi's list.

Might be worth checking Canadian records to see if you can find his arrival in Canada although it is so 'recent' that might be difficult.

The name may well be spelt Čengija in the original.

You can't do much in the FYR without knowing more about place of origin, which is often best discovered in the destination country of an immigrant. Religion can help with ethnicity and therefore with republic of origin, as Croats tend to be Roman Catholic, Serbs Orthodox etc (as of course your friend will know).

The surname is to be found in Croatia (there are 44 listings on the current telephone directory http://www.tportal.hr/imenik/default.asp?lang=en ) but there is also a place of this name in Bosnia (although this may have been a Croat village).

What information does your friend hold?

Hello Grey and Aghadowey,

I think I'm going to get my friend to ask her older brother if he knows anything cause we were only in grade 3 when he died.

I'll have her order her parents marriage certificate which will hopefully have her father's parents named on it.

Thanks for all your help.
