I suggest you also put your surnames on the Research names or areas part of your profile (that's the bit that appears at the bottom of every post). Quite a lot of people spot these and make contact even when you post on a completely different topic

Another suggestion. What you want is that if someone googles "John Smith" or whatever your ancestor was called is for your query to be on the first or second pages. Try entering a number of names and see which boards come up on the first two pages. Those are where you want to leave your details.
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson
Cheshire - Berry, Cooper
Lincs - Berry
London/Ireland/Scotland/Lincs - Sullivan
Northumberland/Durham - Nicholson, Cuthbert, Turner, Robertson
Berks - May
Beds - Brownell

Thank you Diana and Nick for those suggestions.

Any more from anyone ? I'm fairly convinced that there must be living descendants out there, it just comes down to two main factors :-

1) Are they interested in Family History.........this is the main one !

2) Are they looking on the same sites that I'm on.......all I can do is to post up the details on various boards/sites and wait.

I'm also trying the local press in the area's. Portsmouth figures on two of my four 'searches' - so I'm awaiting an e-mail back from the local paper there. Hopefully they will permit me to send them the words and they will print.

I'll keep everyone updated, as my success (or failure !) might encourage others to do the same.

i went the long way round  and sarched the entire BMD collection after 1912 when it gives you mothers maiden name! but that only works with uncommon names

I don't believe that any of my Great Grandparents in these instances had any siblings after 1912.

During the 1910's decade............they were all getting married !

Good idea though and definately worth it for the next generation down from them.

Thanks Jean for those points.

And yes, I'm all signed up for GR...............I've already found a 3rd cousin from these 4 sections just posted. Her G Grandfather was a brother to my G Grandmother

have you put your tree on GR? the hot matches may give you some useful contacts in amongst the useless ones. Its a pain to go through them all (especially if you have a common name) but its the best site I've found for contacting living rellies. What about electoral rolls and the phone book searches? 192.com can be useful

I know this is an obvious question, but have you checked the BMDs for marriages of any of the siblings?
