Herbert Haskins married Eudoxie Darnet in 1919 in Aston WAR

Start with obtaining the marriage certificate.
check the address(es) on electoral rolls
try to find herbert at least in 1901 census...

Also, since you are loooking for your ancestor,
you can work back through your own (& your parents) certificates

Here are the references needed to buy a copy of the marriage cert:

HASKINS  Herbert  Sep 1919   Aston 6d   1312

Eudoxie is shown as Eudoxie E P Darnet.  The cert  should show her full name plus the name and occupation of her father; this will help you to trace her roots in France.

There is a French site called généalogie.com which looks quite good.  There is a little free stuff but to get the best, you have to pay.  You can have a month for not a lot of money, so it may be worth it.  They occasionally have French genealogists on there, too, of whom you can ask questions if you are a paid-up member.  Have a look!

Friends,

It's a pleasure!  I too have mysterious French ancestors who we know of in the West Indies - now THAT's a difficulty!  I have found a distant cousin who spends half of each year in France, and have tried to sool her onto this site, but she isn't very good at computers!  Mercifully, she has found a Genealogical Society of the Caribbean, which is yielding some results.

Even if you register as a free member, généalogie.com will send you a regular email bulletin.  It's in French!  (not sure if an English version is available).  You can register your names of interest and the bulletin will contain new entries for that name.  But to see other people's trees in detail, you have to pay!

Do join, at least as free members, and get this bulletin.  And if you need any help with translation, let me know.  I read French very well, speak and understand verbal French tolerably well.  (Currently addicted to watching le Tour de France!!!!)

Hiya dizziebee,

There's an article in About.com Genealogy. It's "Genealogy in France" from Kimberly Powell.
It contains five pages titled "A Beginner's Guide to Researching Your French Ancestry"
