Please tell me where George GARNER was from.
« on: Tuesday 24 July 07 16:20 BST (UK) »
Dear Sussex RootsChatters,

Do any of you recognise the place where George GARNER Junr. was from in the attached image?  It seems to begin "Hursty..." but then I get lost.  I can't find any modern Sussex place that seems to fit.

The image is from a will dated 1822 and made in Kent, so some allowance should perhaps be made for those foreigners not being up on their Sussex geography!

Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe

Hi Stovepipe

I can't make out the image as yet, need to study for a while but there are a few places in Sussex that start with Hurst

Hurstpierpoint and Hurstmonceux and Hurst Green come to mind.  Can't make out any though.

Hurst Green is only a few miles from Burwash though  ???  I've had a look at Ancestry and there is a George Garner born 1818 at Salehurst living in Etchingham which is a mile down the hill from Hurst Green so I think it could be Hurst Green.

Blimey, Kerry - that was a rapid response.  Many thanks.  I hadn't thought of Hurst Green, but now you mention it, it could be written as "Hurstgreen" although the 6th letter to me looks more like a "y" than a "g".  Perhaps the scribe in 1822 misread his copy.

Cheers,

Hi there

Got to  agree with Kerry; after looking at all the possibilities of Hurstpeirpoint, Hurstmonceux etc - have to settle for Hurstgreen written as all one word rather than Hurst Green

The more I look the more I think it is Hurstgreen as Chris says written as one word.

Kerry and Chris, thanks to you both - I'm satisfied it's Hurstgreen.

Hi,

This seems very likely to either be an ancestor of my maternal grandfathers as his paper trail notes say his Paternal Line (he was a Garner) last of his generation and only child originated from Salehurst Sussex but.later moved to Kent my grandfather was a dairy farmer near Canterbury. Hope this helps
