Abram Stewart, Ireland
« on: Thursday 26 July 07 03:06 BST (UK) »
I'm having a very frustrating search, trying to find anything at all about a man named Abram Stewart.  And the only reason I know his name at all, is that it's on his son's marriage registration.

Thomas Stewart, born abt. 1841, Ireland, parents, Abram and Ann,

married Ann Deacon in 1846, Innisfil Twp, Barrie, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.

I have been slowly working my way backward, but when I get to Thomas, everything starts to slow down and at Abram, it comes to a grinding halt.

I'd love to know more about Thomas, (particularly when and where he came from in Ireland), his parents, grandparents, etc.  I just don't know if I can get anywhere at all, because I have nothing to go on.  I just know that somewhere between 1841 and 1863, he came to Canada.  I don't know if he came alone, or if his parents and any  other siblings came with him.  I don't know where they departed from or where they landed.

Can anybody help at all, or is it hopeless?

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.

Would it be fair to assume that Abram is an abbreviation of Abraham.

The search engine on OriginsNetwork certainly seems to think so anyway.

There is one Abraham Stewart in the index of the 1851 census for Dublin and he is living at 42, New Row South in the parish of St Lukes, Dublin South.

He doesn't get a mention in Griffths. There is an Abraham Stewart mentioned several times in Griffiths as a property landlord in LondonDerry and Donegal.

Thank you!

I appreciate the reply.  I haven't had any luck tracing Thomas Stewart's birth registration through IGI, so I have no way of knowing which Abraham Stewart might be the right one (if any), but it's still good information to have in case I get something to check it against in the future.

Thanks again.

Have you found an obituary for Thomas in Canada? Quite often the newspapers there would include details of where the deceased had come from and when they arrived in Canada. Local histories (especially Victorian ones) were great at putting in biographies of early settlers. Also, are there any clues on Thomas' death certificate? How about census records- do any of them list a county rather than just Ireland?

Thomas born c1841 & married 1846?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

There is a Stewart family who came to Innisfil....

"It is believed that our great grandfather, Charles Stewart, resided near Monahan, Ireland.  One of his sons, William, came to Canada as a young boy, with a family by the name of McClelland in 1840...."

No mention of an Abram Stewart though or your Thomas  :(

aghadowey and KarenM,

Sorry, yes, it should have read married 1863 (1846 was Ann's birth year).

No obit and no death record so far, because I cannot seem to find the correct Thomas Stewart.

Unfortunately, right now, I am limited to free sites for my information, and of course the kindness of people like everyone here, for their help.  What little original information I started out with was exhausted long ago.

I have been fortunate enough to access some of the ancestry records when there was a free trial available, but that only takes a person so far.  That is where I found the marriage information for Thomas Stewart and Anne Deacon, but there was no original image available to view, only a transcription.

Sorry I can't offer any more information than that, I'm basically still a novice in the genealogy hunt.

I do thank you all for your time and effort anyway.
I appreciate it very much.
