I think what I refered to as Georges Row above may have had the formal address of St Giles Square although I thought the name change occured at the junction with Wood Hill and so you are actually looking at the old Northampton Gaol.  I have problems with the names by which I knew places in Northampton fifty years ago and their correct addresses.  I am also a little confused about the precise location of the old gaol

Hi Nadine/David.

Nadine good to see you posting on Northants board again.

The County Jail was in St Giles Street, it is now a Bank opp
the Guildhall, the small lock up I think was on the corner
of Guildhall Road and George's Row, at least it was certainly
a small Police Division.

There is another topic about Mr Grant the Govener of the Jail.

I will find it and put the link.

I think Sandy has answered my question because the road between Wood Hill and Guildhall Road is actually called St Giles Square and it only becomes St Giles Street further east.   Thus the answer to the original query is that the gaol was in St Giles Square.

What would be interesting would be to learn why it is called a square.  Does it mean that the Guildhall was actually built on what was previously a square?

Sandy

Sandy you're not referring to Barclays are you in St Giles Square?

If so, that closed as a bank some years ago(cos there's one not far away in The Drapery)

The old Barclays building is now a pub  ;)

I can remember attending various training courses there over the years which were always held in an upstairs room.I used to love looking out of the window and admiring the architecture of the Guildhall opposite  ;D
