Have you looked at the baptism entry itself in the parish register as that may give further information on the father? Does it state it was a late baptism?
They may also be some information in Edenbridge poor law records, so it might be worth checking with Kent Record Office.

Edenbridge is in west Kent on the Surrey border. Preston by Wingham is in east Kent - Isle of Thanet, so I wouldn't really call that around the same place.
Sophia Friend in 1841 was at least 80 since ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census. That would have made her at her youngest 49 in 1810 (Caroline may have been adjusting her age to lower it to fit nearer her younger husband's age).
