Fossil Digger
« on: Saturday 28 July 07 13:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This is my first time using Roots chatroom. I would like to know if anyone else has an ancestor that was a fossil digger.

On the 1881 census there is:

Joseph Rolls
Age 25
Born Heath and Reach Bedfordshire
Address St Thomas Street Heath and Reach
Married
Occupation Fossil Digger

He is the brother of my great grandfather George Rolls who was married to Emma Foster.

What fossils were discovered in Bedfordshire to need a full  time digger. The rest of the family were agriculture labourers and some of the women worked in the straw plaiting industry.

bye for now

Welcome to RootsChat!  I'm sure you'll enjoy your time on the site.

Fossiled dinosaur dung is probably the answer.

Here's an earlier thread about it -

Hi Monica

Thanks for your help  I wasnt expecting it to be that !

I am going to find a book of old occupations as my ideas of what jobs entailed in the past obviously are not what they really were.
