*COMPLETED* Mary Jane Merrall mystery
« on: Saturday 28 July 07 16:25 BST (UK) »
My latest census mystery is finding any record of Mary Jane Merrall (b 1864 Keighley) to Harry (c 1828) and Martha (c 1828). The only record I've found so far is in the 1881 Census (Class: RG11; Piece: 4348; Folio: 96; Page: 41) but everything else so far has come up blank.

A possible related entry in the 1861 (correction: 1871) census has "B Jane"  (Rg10/ 4317 folio 19 page 31) and although the dates match it's not helping tie things together.

I'm not having much luck with my particular branch party due I think to a general lack of children being produced :)  Census etc is pretty bad compared to other branches.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
 Graeme

Hi Graeme

I have found the same family as you on the 1871 but think think it might just be a badly written M!!!  ;)

Will see if I can find any more.

Best wishes

Hello Graeme

This links with all the others mentioned above.....

1851

Keighley HO107/2287 Folio 397 Page 26

John Merral Head M 51 Labourer on the highway Keighley Yorkshire
Barbara do Wife M 57 Colne Lancashire
Henry do Son M 23 Stone Delver Keighley Yorkshire
Martha do Daughter in Law M 23 Worsted Weaver Sh...ead (?) Lancashire

Nelson Street, Keighley

I think that this might help to explain the 1871 entry better. In 1871 the two birth places have obviously been crossed. Henry is from Keighley and Martha is from somewhere in Lancashire which I am not familiar with (but I suspect that it is part of, or near to, Colne). The place is transcribed as Showhead in 1871 and as Shahead in 1851. On the 1861 entry found by Dee, it actually says Colne for Martha’s birthplace.

The address of Nelson Street, Keighley is consistent throughout and I agree with Rosie that it is a badly written “M” in 1871 for Mary Jane and not a “B“ as transcribed.

Hope that helps

DS ;)

1901 Census (RG13/4078 f152 p32)
51 South Street, Keighley

Robert Smith  Head  M  35  ???? maker (own account, at home) b. Bingley
Mary J  Wife  M  37 b. Keighley
James H  Son  12  b. do
Mary  Daur  10  b. do

Robert's occupation is hard to read as it has been over-written. It looks like 'Potted beef maker'.
