Hi Rosie

It definitely does look like “Potted Beef Maker” on the 1901 census. I cannot imagine what else it could be ;D

Graeme

This is why we cannot find Henry (or Martha) on a census after 1881....

Probable Death Registrations

1878 Keighley AMJ quarter 9a 131

Martha Merrall Aged 50

1885 Keighley AMJ quarter 9a 146

Henry Merrall Aged 57

...the other children of Henry and Martha...

Probable Death Registration

1861 Keighley JAS quarter 9a 125

Ellen Ann Merrall

John Merrall appears in 1871 and 1881 with his father. There is only one birth registration in Keighley between 1865 and 1869 for anyone called John Mer*. Therefore any census entry with the correct details is likely to be him.

1891

Bingley RG12/3534 Folio 137 Page 5

A John Merrall aged 24 and single from Keighley is a lodger in the household of a William Badcock at 7 Woodfield, Bingley. He is described as a Wool Spinning Overlooker.

Hi Graeme

AMJ = April May June (referring to the second quarter of the year).

“Probable” is just a word that I have inserted to indicate that the registration shown is most likely to be the correct one

So not probably dead then? I was wondering if there was a register for people for people who weren't quite sure. Like when I wake up on some Staurday mornings...   ;D
