STANTON's of Midleton
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 08:13 BST (UK) »
Have just found out that another ancestor ANN STANTON was from Midleton Co.Cork.   Great..... after a number of years of just "Co.Cork"....but: Ann would have been born approx c 1812.

Firstly, is there anyone tracing any Stanton's in Midleton, and secondly would I be able to find out her parentage from such an early date?  Any or either of the above would be lovely!!.

At the baptism of her first daughter (Rebecca Rosina Russell in 1842 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Sydney N.S.W. (one witness was a MICHAEL STANTON).

Regards

Webby,

The National Library in Dublin holds parish records for Midleton baptisms from 1819 to 1880. (Film number P4986). Too late for Ann of course, but if she had siblings born around 1819 you could still be lucky. (But if you're in Oz, perhaps not that lucky!)

There are lots of Stantons records on the LDS site for County Cork, including a few in Midleton, but I suppose you've seen those...

Hi Leofric

Thank's for your reply!.  As usual I'm out of luck.......I do live in Australia and I was wondering if the Michael Stanton was perhaps a sibling of Ann.....hopefully a younger one, but I couldn't find any filmings on the LDS site for Midleton Cork and for that matter, I didn't find any Stanton records???

'Midleton Parish 1901-1911 Census' was about the nearest I could get!

I'll go back and check the site again........I've known for some time that I need new glasses, so I think I had better do something about getting them - as I honestly didn't see any Stanton references on the site!.  Thanks so much for that tip!!!.

Regards

Webby,

This is how I found the records:

On the FamilySearch.org site click 'advanced search'

Then click international Genealogy Index (on the left)
Then type in Stanton in the surname box (but no Christian name). Leave type of records as 'all'. Do not fill in any dates.
Then fill in the boxes with British Isles/Ireland/Cork

Hit the search button and you should see 169 records relating to Stantons.

Hope lots of 'em are yours!
Leofric :D

Hey Webby,

My name is Paul Stanton, from Midleton in Co. Cork. I'm not sure that there is any connection but there are not that many Stantons in the area so you never know.

I'm not really sure how much help i can be to you, but let me know if I can do anything.

Have you any idea what year Ann Stanton travelled to Australia?

Hi Paul
Just wondering whether you received my message with regard to Ann?

If not.....Ann Stanton was listed as a housemaid, 22 years and was a R.C from Cork.  She travelled with a group of unmarried females aboard the "Georgiana" from Liverpool to Melbourne in February 1841.

Ann married John Russell a private in the 28th Regiment from Manorhamilton, Ireland who had arrived on the "Strathfieldsaye" in 1836.  They married in December of 1841 in Melbourne.

Ann lived to the great age of 98  years, she died in Hobart and her birthplace was given as Midleton, Co.Cork Ireland.

If as you said there aren't that many Stantons....I would be interested if you have any idea if this Ann could be related somewhere!.

Hi Webby,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I havn't had a chance to do much rooting for you yet. As I say, there are not that many Stantons in the area today but back before the Great Famine, there were quite a few. My own family comes from Ladysbridge, which is about 5 miles from Midleton. I know there were also Stantons in Midleton town and in Cloyne. I do not know if there was any connection.

Leave it with me and if I come up with anything that might interest you, I promise to get back to you.

Thanks,

Paul
