Leah Hugins
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 08:52 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for Leah HUGINS from St Mellons.

She was probably born around 1816 in St Mellons. I'm not sure the name Hugins is right but her daughter's birth certificate (not a copy of the original) states this.
Since she was Welsh speaking I wonder could she have been HUGHES or something similar. I think she was married between 1837-1838 (if I'm lucky)  since the first child, Mary was born in 1839. Leah married Job Elias of Llanishen, Cardiff.
She would have been my great great grandmother.
I'd be so grateful for any information.
Thank you

The IGI has a baptism of a Leah HUDGINS, daughter of John and Jennet Hudgins on 2 Dec 1814 in St. Mellons.

There are a number of other Hudgins baptisms in St. Mellons  between 1807 and 1837.  The entries can be found in the St. Mellons baptisms on the Hugh wallis site:

Thank you so very much pritch 19

I've been searching for her surname for some time. It was disconcerting to find her surname as Hugins on her daughter's birth certificate since the name did not make any sense in a Welsh context but then neither does HUDGINS.
Anyway, I'll carry on searching for Leah Hudgins now.
Thanks again

Parents Marriage
John Hudgins to Jennett John on 5th May 1806 in Wentlooge,St Brides Monmouth

1841 Census
Croft Inn House,St Mellons,Monmouth
Mistranscribed as Hudghens on Ancestry

John Hudgins,61,Ag ,Lab,N
Amy Hudgins,19,Y
William Hudgins,21,Ag Lab,Y

This fits in with the baptism of Leahs siblings on the IGI that Pritch found one is Amy b-1822,William b-1820 there are others they must have left home by 1841.

Oh how exciting!

Thank you so much Welsh lady. This fills in a huge gap for me.
The next census for Leah, 1851, she is married to Job Elias, born in Llanishen and they are living in Merthyr Tydfil with their six children!!  One of her children is called Jennet and another William.
Thank you so much.
