Look up requests
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 19:52 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone feels the same as me  ???

I love doing looks up as it gives me pleasure to help others but what drives me nuts is when the requester posts "looking for Joe Bloggs etc  aged ?" and not the year they were born, which is what we have to search by  ::)

I,m not good at maths and therefore have to keep a calculator by my side constantly.

I'm constantly using the calculator when looking through census records - I'm still new to this and have a tendency to forget what year I'm in. I'll zoom in 200% to read something, get the age and forget what year I was in...ends up taking ages, that's usually when I'm tired though :)
Sorry if this is a bit random, I'm tired again!

It may be that the requester doesn't know what the most helpful format of the ages is - especially when they see the census information usually typed out as:
Joe Bloggs, head, 45
Mary Bloggs, wife, 43
Fred Bloggs, son, 13

Must say that my mental arithmetic has improved since starting the family history lark, but fingers and calculators certainly help!  :D

Yes I do agree with that, I always make allowances for the "newbies" but other than those, surely nearly all posters have done a look up request for someone else themselves at some time or other.

I'd rather have the census age, because then I know that's were it came from, and take it with a pinch of salt!

It seems only the birth certificates are right. Marriage and death certs can be wrong and censuses can be horribly confusing!

I tend to take most census ages with a +-5 years anyway because I don't think I've got one ancestor who's census age is spot on!!!! ::)

I've got a nice calculator too but I think the battery is going to need to be changed soon, the numbers are fading!

I always do + or - 5 too...I was looking at a family yesterday and the wife started off 2 years older than her husband and ended in 1901 10 years younger  ::)
