Think Hair Dresser also. The H in Hair is same as H in surname and double ss in dresser written old style fs.

I'm sticking with hair dresser, but my first thought was "ham dresser" - but there can't be such a job - can there??

Given that the old boy is 75, there must surely be earlier censuses that will let us know one way or another.

Agree....Looks to be "Hair" Dresser...as the writer's script "m" is all open looped at the top...altho it is always hard to tell for sure with low res. scans. Perhaps a directory listing  to confirm?

   Gareth

There could be a job described as a Ham Dresser, after all there is dressed ham, dressed crab, dressed turkey etc... meaning trimmed or spiced or patially prepared.

If it is Hair Dresser, what's the tall letter  (after the old double s that was wriiten as an f)?
