Agree !

Its that funny loopy S that confuses I think.

As Lydart said...It was used as an "s" especially when there were double "s"es... ....Nevermind...
it gets harder when some tended to use it as a single "s"  :P :P

I'm voting for Ham Dresser - compare the 'm' in James and the same ending flourish on the  'm' below.

Never !    If you ARE right, then 'ham' for some odd reason has four down strokes in the 'm' ... whereas if its hair, then there's an h, an a, an i, and one of those funny backwards r's ...

Go for hair dresser, Shipwright !

It's definitely hairdresser.  ::)
There is an upstroke from the "i" to the "r" in "hair" which isn't present in the "m"

Well, I can see a faint curve on the top of what you see as the i.

Although it's missing in this copy, there is the beginnings of an upstroke at the base of the "i".  I had a photoshop fiddle  ;D  and it's definitely an "i".

Anyway, would Ham Dresser have been his one and only occupation?  It was surely part of a wider job to do with food dressing or preparation.  I can't believe that someone would have specialised in ham dressing!  ;) ;D

stranger things have happened - but it would have been seasonal then - autumn/winter, I'd say.  When did Barber become the alternative description?

Right! Barbers did men's hair and maids did ladies. I think they'd got beyond wigs by 1840 hadn't they?
