Allen Index Lookup Request - FARMER
« on: Monday 30 July 07 21:05 BST (UK) »
hi,

If there is anyone with access to the Allen index please can they look up my Gt,gt,gt,gt,gt grandfather John Farmer born either 1778 or 1790 at flitton with silsoe and he married Ann from Weston in Bedfordshire. I have looked on the family research site but there is nothing for them in Bedfordshire.
I know that by 1807 they had a daughter born at hatfield so I guess they probabley married sometime from 1800 to 1807 . I would like to confirm who their parents were and what Ann`s surname was.

thanks

Jackie

Hi Peter
Thank you for taking the time to follow up my request I am sitting here so excited at having another piece of the jigsaw( so to speak) filled in. I just wondered how do I go about obtaining a copy of their marriage certificate or is it just an entry in a book.
Were they married by banns or licence?

Bye for now

Jackie

Hi Jackie

Unless someone can look at the original Hatfield PR entry for you, you will need to quote the details to HALS and they will send you a copy of the original record. There will be a small charge to cover the photcopying costs.  At this date, you will have;

Names of both parties
Marital Status
Parish Status ( i.e whether they were of the parish of Hatfield)
Whether they were married by Banns or Licence
Names of 2 marriage witnesses.

Hi Rick

Thanks for your help, I will phone Hals tomorrow and order a photo copy. I have never been over to hertford or down to the archives in London. I do want to investigate the birth of my 5xgt grandfather`s grand daughter who was born in Hatfields work house in 1844 and was never claimed by the family. I know that Hals has the records for the work house and that she was still there in 1851 so there must be something written about her. I want to be able to sit and read the original documents and gain a better understanding of what life was really like for those that entered the workhouse. It will have to be a holiday project!

Bye for now

Jackie

It will be well worth the visit!  It is a fascinating place, but be warned - you will get hooked.  Looking at original documents and having expert help on hand is so much nicer than working online on your own.

Have you found the Hatfield Workhouse link?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,112187.0.html

Using the Left hand side menu, select

"Workhouse Locations" then

"English Poor Law Unions" then

"Hertfordshire." then

"Hatfield"

Rick :)

Hi Rick

I have just phoned HALS and asked about having a copy of the marriage entry for John Farmer. It would cost seven pounds but if i go over to Hertford it will only be fifty pence. So all being well I plan to escape from the home( no I am not in the lunatic asylum )
and head over to there on Friday. I can then do some research on the work house records as well.
Thank you for all your help, this site is really great and my typing skills are being improved all the time.

Bye for now

Jackie
