Hi John & Esterby

I do have some transcripts of the Cote chapel registers,  not sure how much help they are.  There are 3 Hudson births mentioned

1829 Jan 28th Anne d/o Thomas & Mary Hudson born at Coate

1834 June 10th Frederick s/o John & Easter Hudson bortn at Coate

1836 April 1 George s/o Mark & Ann Hudson born at Cote

there is 1 burial mentioned

1839 April 22 Mary Hudson w/o William of Coate

- the transcripts finsih in 1836 for births & 1839 for burials

There are no Kerrys mentioned

So other than it is possible that Thomas's wife was Mary and Rebecca may have had a sister Anne,  I am not sure they help much

HI Debbie thanks for that.

Thomas was in his 50s by the time Anne was born assuming he's the right one ; I wonder if it was a second marriage. Anyway, thanks for that, it's the first time I've had a name for a wife for him!

Are your transcripts for Cote complete or just an extract?

They are complete as far as I am aware - though I think the registers themselves may be patchy.

Anyway I have found a Rebecca d/o of a Thomas born the right sort of time

baptisms from Stanton Harcourt

1815 Jan 1 Rebecca d/o Thomas Elizabeth Hudson lab of Sutton
1817 Feb 2 Charlotte d/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hudson lab of Sutton (born Jan 22)
1819 Aug 22 Hannah d/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hudson lab of Aston (born May 8)
1822 March 31 Susannah d/o Thomas & Elizabeth of Sutton b March 25
1824 April 4 Caroline d/o Thomas & Elizabeth of Sutton b March 4
1826 April 26 Caroline d/o Thomas & Elizabeth of Sutton b June 30th

There are some other earlier ones for children of this couple who married in 1799,  but I thought I would see if this was of interest before copying them all out

I think this Thomas was the one buried in 1832 aged 55 - Elizabeth didn't die until 1852 - I have found her on the 1851 census - Any Good?

I don't think so unfortunately - Rebecca always gives her birthplace as Bampton or Cote in the censuses, and was probably born in 1817 or 1818.  And of course Thomas was still alive in 1851.

Thanks anyway.

Hi

The reason I looked at Stanton Harcourt was I checked the Oxfordshire marriage index for a possible marriage of a Thomas Hudson to a Mary,  as the chapel at Cote was not licensed for marriages that early - they would have had to get married in a C of E church,  the only one I came up with was

Stanton Harcourt marriage
1807 June 23 Thomas Hudson bach otp to Mary Carter (x) sp otp
witnessed Fanny Brookes (x) & John Hunt

This couple do not appear to have any children baptised at Stanton Harcourt though.

Thanks for that Debbie - it's an interesting one and would fit the dates.  Only a few miles away too; I need to have a think!

OK - I've been fishing some more

I found the marriage for Harriet Hudson & Thomas King (of Besslesleigh) in 1829 in Shifford - it was witnessed by Mark Hudson & Ann Dipper

There is also a baptism for Harriet 1808 22nd May Harriet d/o Thomas & Mary Hudson

The marriage for Mark Hudson & Ann Williams in 1835 witnessed by William Fitchet & Mary Williams

and a marriage in 1833 for John Hudson to Esther Seary
witnessed by Frederick Hudson & Ann Dipper

The plot thickens

Debbie and John,
You have done some good searching.  The Cote Coate chapel (spelt variously) was new and the grave of, I think, Mark and Ann is to the right of the front entrance. I believe he was buried before the chapel was finished. Somewhere I have a photo.
Details of George Hudsonchristened 1 April 1836 is correct and I have the original copy certificate of entry into the register.
Ann Williams is interesting and may have had a child before marrying Mark.  This comes from the various census and was Charles Williams son in law.  this was a common method apparently.
When George died Ann went to her brother at Minster Lovell .  I have tried to find a good link between the Hudsons there and Cote but all subjective.
Esther Seaby appears elsewhere on Roots (Luckett family) and I believe came from Clanfield.  She should have inherited the house but was I think prevented by the married womens property act, abolished not long after.
Harriet Hudson was the original subject and you work identifies another Thomas to Marks father unless of course?
Until there is knowledge of Bampton registers it is possible that Mark and Rebecca were siblings.  This is rather than cousins as I suggested earlier. At this time everything had to be in the C of E as you mention Debbie.  It is a while since I checked but there is a lot of information on the IGI site who I suspect have the Baptist Chapel registers complete.
You have thrown in Stanton Harcourt so I will throw in Bampton itself.  There are a number of Hudson graves including a doctor and a death in France.  Again, no link found to the Cote Hudson.  But another searcher found a link to Ireland and Australia.  Is the family tale of missing out on a sheep farm in Australia due to a closer relative in Ireland all a fairy tale?

Currently I am chasing Astbury in Cheshire and I need to clarify my early Hudson work.  This originally started because the Miles Clinch and Hinton families come from Standlake Ducklington Witney area and hence were probably known to the Hudsons around 1830 - 1860.
