Two puzzles from the 1851 census
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 19:09 BST (UK) »
I managed to look up 2 people on the 1851 census this morning before being kicked off the library's computer because someone else had booked access to Ancestry.  It left me with 2 puzzles.
1)  John Thomas Sellers born 1845 in Dunnington near York.  His parents were William Sellers and Ann.  I couldn't find him on the 1851 at all, but on the 1861 he's there as the son of Richard Mintoft, a 52-year-old widower.  All I can think of is that William Sellers died, Ann married Mintoft and then she died as well.  Any help would be appreciated.
2)  Samuel Smith born 1811 in Keighley is down as a ??? loom weaver.  The word looked to me like "Poner".  Any ideas?
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I have just checked the entries on the 1861 Census & I believe it had 'serv' not 'son' for John Thomas Sellers, although I may be wrong.

Samuel Smith born in Keighley - looks like his occupation is a Wool Comber

I hope this helps

Thanks so much for that.  Told you I was doing it in a hurry.  But I feel suitably silly about "power" loom weaver.  :-[

Thanks, everyone.  I've discovered from the IGI that John's mother was Ann Mintoft, so there's a connection to be unravelled.
