WW1 Medal Card Info needed
« on: Friday 03 August 07 04:05 BST (UK) »
I recently downloaded the Medal Index Card for my grandfather George LEMMING and from it I can see that he was issued the Victory, British & Star medals.  Each of these medals has a reference beside it of Roll and page (very hard to read).

Do these references mean that there is a possiblitiy of more information on my grandfather and if so where would it be held?

Is it available online (because I'm in Australia)?

If not online how can I have a search done for it?

Thanks, any help of information greatly appreciated.

Kerry

Just came back to add that there is no record of him in the WW1 Pension records on Ancestry.  He obviously wasn't discharged before the end of the war.

Hi Kerry

The references you refer to are for the Medal Rolls.  There may be a little more info but not a lot.

They are held in the NA at Kew and are not on line.

You could hire a researcher but you would need to be searching for his war record as well to make it worth while.  As you may be aware around 70% of WW1 war records were destroyed by the Luftwaffe during WW2.

I did hear somewhere that Ancestry were digitising the remaining war records as well as the pension records but I could be corrected on that one.

You could also start a thread on here asking if any of our UK chatters are going to the NA and could have a look for you.

Thanks for the reply Bob.

I think I will take up your idea and start a thread asking if anyone is doing look ups at the NA in Kew.

Hi Kerry,

Once I downloaded my grandfather's MIC I employed a searcher who was listed on the TNA site and it cost me GBP 55.00 to obtain his Medal Rolls

My granfather's Medal Rolls survived the WW11  bombings and were in pristine condition. Each medal roll gives a bit more info about where they were in the war. Even though he was injured they did not let him go until one month after the war was finished. He was discharged as "sick" on his SWB medal roll but was never given a pension according to the uk pension records.

Kind Regards

Steve

Thanks for the information on the MC rolls Steve.

I have had an offer from someone who may be going to Kew in the next few weeks.  I have my fingers crossed that their generosity will be rewarded.
