George W Rix - Wisbeach/Cromer/Erpingham- COMPLETED
« on: Friday 03 August 07 10:20 BST (UK) »
Help please - I have found George W Rix in the censuses from 1871 to 1901. I have a small problem with the place of birth - from 1871 to 1891 it is given as CROMER and in 1901, when he has moved and is married, as WISBEACH (both in Norfolk). In the birth register, first quarter 1865, there is a George William Rix born in ERPINGHAM. Can I be reasonably sure this is the same George? Many thanks!

Hi Hilary,

Erpingham registration district covers Cromer:

My tip: do a google search for genuki+place name  :)

I believe Wisbeach and Wisbech are one and the same ... In the case you describe above I wouldn't doubt much Cromer to be his actual birth place.  :)

Hi Tilly

You sure that he is the right man in 1901 as on the 1891 he is a fish dealer, on the 1901 he is a platelayer, which is a big change of jobs.On the 1901 census there is a George Rix aged 36 born Cromer with wife living at Alby St Ethelbert, Aylsham, Norfolk, down as gen lab.

Wisbech or Wisbeach is in Cambridgeshire and and 59 miles from Cromer Norfolk

Sorry to put a doubt in it

Hello Ricky
The 1901 census is the one I am sure about, as my Grandmother's name is there and I know all the other names too!  Didn't think to check that there was another Rix in 1901 (will remember for future research)- however, my George is always down as George W or George William - does your George have an initial in 1901? (hope not!).
Many thanks for your help

Hi Tilly

the George I mentioned did not have another middle name on it, the only thing I carnt work out why say he comes from Wisbech on the 1901 when they are miles apart from Cromer and different county.

I think the Wisbech Rix is a different man. It is unlikely he would forget where he was born when he got it right in the early years.

Ricky's suggestion is worth exploring.

Have you looked for a Rex, Ricks, or other synonym for the other years?
