Help Wanted! CUMERS
« on: Saturday 04 August 07 00:00 BST (UK) »
Okay - bare with me as I am new at the message board thing and don't even know if I have the correct one to post my information  . . . here goes . . .

1851 england census has an entry for Charlotte HARRINGTON, age 20, daughter of Ina and Eliz CUMERS.

Now HARRINGTON is her married name and I have all census records for 61, 71, 81, 91.

However I couldn't find her on the 1841 Census as a 10 year old. I have not been able to find her birth or the marriage of her parents!

Eliz CUMERS died 2Q 1842 Kensington

Charlotte's birth est 1831, Devon, England

She married William HARRINGTON 1850.  William was no where to be found on the 1851 Census!

I have tried spelling variations of CUMERS - no luck!

Perhaps someone out there will have more success - here's hoping!

Hello Maureen,
Welcome to RootsChat

How sure are you that Charlotte Harrington is the daughter of Eliz and Ina Cumers???

In 1851 there is this Charlotte Harrington
43 Primrose Hill
St Brides
Middlessex

Jno Cumers Head M  41 Carpenter b. Devon
Elizth Cumers wife M 47Bonnet Maker Middlesex Westmr
Charlotte Harrington Servant 20 Devonshire

HO107 1527 336 33

Head of the house is transcribed as "Ina"-image reads "Jno" (=John)
Wife is "Elizth" =Elizabeth and it looks like she was born Middlesex Westminster
Relationship of Charlotte Harrington to head of house is "Servant"
Marital status of Charlotte is unclear - it is not like other M's (=married) on page - looks more like "W" (Widow)

What qtr and reg district did Charlotte marry William Harrington in 1850 -I have not managed to trace their marriage???

Do you have the marriage cert ?

As for Charlotte's birth, you will have to put a post out for her baptism ( on Devonshire board), as registration did not start until Sept qtr 1837 -but you will need to be certain of her parents names to do that

Will have another look around to see what else I can find.

I think I have this right . . .

Servant maybe, but not at parent's home.  Relation noted as daughter.

William was born 1829 Rain/Baintree, Essex died between 1866 (last child born 1865, Charlotte a widow in 71, 81, 91, 01 census records) and 1871

Have 3 marriage records for William HARRINGTON
1. 1850 AMJ St Martins in the Fields Vol 1 pg 167

2. 1850 AMJ Whitechapel Vol 2 pg 630

3. 1850 OND Chelsea vol 3 pg 47

I'm only guessing 1850 and haven't been able to check as i never had Charlotte's surname.

Where was William on Census night?

1855 they were living St Georges, Middlesex and 1871 census has Charlotte and her children  in Paddington, London until the death of Charlotte.

I have found Charlotte on other census you have

On the 1851 image I have sent Charlotte's age is transcribed as 20, but it looks more like 28 to me

I'm still looking around for other possibilities

Yeah, I thought it looked like a 28 as well!  So now where?  All I have now is Charlotte, born abt 1831, Dittisham, Devon (1861 Census), mind you it's been that way for years!

and I only found William's family not long ago and that was trial and error!

thanks for the tips about transcribing names

A possible "good investment" for you would be to purchase one of the children's birth certificates -that would give you mother's maiden name

The only marriage I can find of William Harrington with a Charlotte on the same page is
Dec qtr 1850
Colchester district Essex
on same page
William Harrington
Charlotte Loades

I'll have another look

Once again thankyou, will do.

I have another Mother without a maiden name, daughter born around 1789 in Barnstaple, Devon.  I know Father's name.  Would getting a birth certificate give me the information I need in that case and that early?  I will post on Devonshire section to see if any one out there knows.

Registration didn't begin until Sept qtr 1837 in Wales, so it's baptisms, IGI, pallots, Boyds, Parish registers before then.
If you post in the relevant county, giving as much detail as you can about the family, someone may have the relevant records -it's amazing the amount of information RootsChatters have between us.

I have been looking for a Charlotte b. about the correct time and place in Devon-and there are a few -I will keep looking over the weekend,

Dittisham is near Dartmouth Devon

I have looked on the IGI Batch website for Dittisham, Devon and found 2 maybes!  A Charlotte Terry DUKE c: 5 dec 1830 and Charlotte SMITH c: 11 apr 1830 and maybe a Charlotte PITTS, although I think the date was earlier than I would have liked.

As the census records show a consistent birth/age  for Charlotte (1831) I have the feeling of looking around the 1830-1832 mark and the above dates were the closest, I was also lucky that Charlotte wasn't a very common name!

Thanks for your time and effort
