It is very easy to loose your place when searching through the indexes for so many years with a few variations of surname. What I do is make a chart beforehand listing the surnames I am searching for on the left side of the page and them draw narrow columns down the page which I label with the years I am searching (don't forget at some point the indexes are divided into quarters so you need 4 columns for each year then). As I work through the list I cross off each box with an X and if I find an entry which I've noted down (on a separate page) I shade in the box instead.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
